My best friend from college recently moved to Fort Collins to start a new job and I was eager to visit her in her new digs. As much as I miss living close to my friends, I am forever grateful to visit them when they move new places!
Syd warned me to bring warm clothes when she saw me post a picture in my tank top on the same day there was a huge snow storm in Colorado that delayed hundreds of flights! Luckily, my flight didn't get delayed but there was still about 8 inches of snow on the ground when I landed. I knew the weather in Colorado would be an adjustment from what I was used to in Florida, but dang! I wasn't ready for that below freezing windchill.
I flew in early the morning of Thanksgiving and we had a nice hour drive north to Fort Collins to catch up on everything new in each others lives. We had dinner with a family friend that afternoon and called about every bar in Fort Collins trying to find somewhere that would be open on the holiday to grab a beer. When that option failed, we opted for freezing our butts off walking to the hot tub, which was about the only place outside that I didn't feel like an ice cube.
Since Syd was new to the city, I was bound and determined to be her friend wing-man for the weekend! We relaxed in the hot tub for almost four hours, drinking beers and eating goldfish, but eventually we made a friend who told us about a few local bars that would be open. He also offered to be a sober ride for us to said bars.
We started at Old Town Putt, which is exactly as it sounds. A bar with a mini putt putt course inside! Unfortunately, it was absolutely dead and the bartender was ready to close for the night so we only stayed for one drink before heading out. I don't remember the name of the other bar we went to, which is okay because it's probably only somewhere I would go when all the other bars are closed on Thanksgiving. But we had a blast! Their french fries are like crack.
The next morning we had to check out Snooze for breakfast since everyone we met the night before recommended it to us. Let me tell ya, it's worth all the hype. I had an order of eggs benedict (surprise, surprise) that did not disappoint, and look at those perfect sunny-side-up eggs that Syd got...
Now that we were properly fueled for the day, we decided to tackle some trails at Horsetooth Reservoir in the snow. We were a little nervous about making the drive up there on such a foggy day but thankfully the roads were clear and we had no problem. We even got to bring her adorable dog, Mack!
He was a trooper, but we didn't last out there long! It was amazing to see the reservoir so snow covered and I'm looking forward to going back in the summer when I can actually see the mountains on the other side!
Afterwards we headed back to Syd's for a chill night in of girl talk and a soak in the hot tub followed by watching Hot Tub Time Machine. Sort of a fitting pick for the weekend we were having! Of course she had to catch me falling asleep at the end of the movie. At least Mack was on the same page.
The next morning, my last morning, we decided to try Urban Egg for breakfast. Unfortunately, they were doing a "week of sobriety" due to a sting operation gone wrong, so we couldn't get Bloody Marys with breakfast like we planned. I ordered the Southwest Benedict and it was quite a spread - chorizo in an open faced tamale with hollandaise on top. It was incredible and indulgent, but definitely not something I could eat every weekend!
We did a little shopping around Old Town, some cuddling with her pets at the apartment, and ended the trip with some brewery hopping at New Belgium and Odell!
Until next time, Syd!
